This morning a man from Sierra Leone came to my school, his name is Samuel Menyongar. His village is Konde Farm. He came to our school to talk about Liberia and Sierra Leone. Some things he said were about ebola, food, contaminated water, school needs, etc. One of the teachers at my school, Mrs. Oliver asked how people in Sierra Leone (Konde Farm) see us Americans. He said they see us as generous, but he said that some Americans have more than they need and some of that, they don't need. I think Africans see Americans this way because they are less fortunate than us and we are extremely lucky to have everything that we do. Because us Americans are so fortunate we should do something to help them out even more. Some things that we could do are a food drive, a clothes drive, a donation box, school supplies like pencils and paper, anything to help them out. Samuel showed us pictures of the schools there and the classrooms. Just by looking at the pictures you can tell that they are less fortunate and need our help. They don't have desks, they have benches, the buildings are not that big and in every class there are about 100 kids. They have small classrooms with a lot of kids and we have big classrooms with about 20-30 kids. My reaction to the way the kids go to school there is sad because the kids there deserve to have a nice classroom, nice clothes, the clean water, after everything the kids and adults have gone through are horrible. I can't imagine getting ebola or malaria or typhoid disease.
Samuel quoted Mahatma Gandhi "Be the change you wish to see in the world" This quote means many things to me. Like, that I can do something to change the world, that I can help save lives, that I can help make a difference in the world. Something that I can to make a positive impact in the world is a food drive to help stop hunger, to donate my old clothes and toys to places that are in need of them, etc. After today I am inspired to help change the world.
