On Friday I went to my sister's show choir competition, and they did really good! But, there was a lot of great talent and it was their first time. They didn't win but they tried very hard and did amazing. On Saturday I went to my softball practice at ISA and jammed my finger, and it still hurts. Then my coach brought out the pitching machine, it is a machine that you put a
Today we did shrinky-dinks with our former principle, Dr. Adams. We also got to use borax to make man-made crystals. To make shrinky-dinks you need sharpies, a plastic container lid, scissors, and a hole puncher. You cut off the ridge of the lid and the rest around it. Then you draw a picture on it and punch a hole in the top, then you shrink it in a oven or toaster oven until it shrinks to a good size. Onto the crystals. Materials: pipe cleaner, straw or pencil, jar or clear cup, borax, scissors, hot water, and string. You first take your pipe cleaner and cut it into 3 equal pieces. Then you twist the pipe cleaner together to make a 6 pointed star. Trim the pipe cleaner to fit your jar or cup. Tie the string to the center of your star. Place your pencil or straw across the jar and set the star in until it's ALMOST touching the bottom, then tie the string to the straw. Next put hot water in the jar, then but 3 tablespoons of borax. Take out your star a set it to the side. Stir the borax until it is dissolved. After that set the star in over night.
My class and I are finishing up our persuasive essays. Mine is about extending the school day, I hope I can convince you! Click to set custom HTML In class we just finished up our inquiry projects, I chose the French and Indian war. This is my Google presentation. Hope you enjoy it! In class we did a journal entry either about Sir Walter Raleigh, John White, or Virginia Dare. I chose Virginia, here is what I wrote. :)
February-10-1587 Dear Diary, It’s our first day working on the new colony! I know it’s a lot of work to build a colony and to take care of it and its people, but I think it’ll be loads of fun! So far we’ve built ten houses. My job is to get supplies from the main hall and to grow crops to take care of the livestock, I really enjoy working I don’t know why but I do. Work here will be BUSY so I won't haev much time to write. Well, I hear John calling my name so I got to go, I got work to do. Sincerely, Virginia Dare. August-16-1590 Dear Diary, Sorry I haven’t written in a very long time but it’s been really busy. Work has gotten harder and I overheard mum talking to papa about the natives. It seems they don’t like us anymore, they stopped trading with us. I don’t understand why though because we didn’t do anything, that I know of. Three years ago John Smith left for supplies, WHERE IS HE!? I am praying he gets back here soon or by the time he gets back we’ll all be dead. In fact, we probably won’t even make it to September! John, get here soon! Well, they called candles out, I guess I got to go to sleep. Good night journal, good night world. Sincerely, Virginia Dare Thanksgiving break was fun but full of sickness. My brother had the flu so my family and I couldn't leave for my grandparents house for Thanksgiving until Thanksgiving (when he was better). At my grandparents I got to see my cousins, aunts, uncles. It was a lot of fun! Then, I had to leave my grandparents house because I had to go to my dads and my mom didn't want my brother to get my grandparents sick. So, I left my grandparents house and my dad picked me up the next day to go to his parents house. We call them Obason and Ojisan. (grandma and grandpa in Japanese). My sister and I stayed there until Sunday. We went back home because we had school the next day (today). After all of that I really didn't do anything exciting. All of ,my family watched a movie together. I am very thankful for what I have. If you feel that you don't have enough, think there is always someone who has less than you.
I am thankful for: School Friends Family Food Water Shelter Clothes And everything my family and I have. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving break! :) I finished the book Listening for Lions that I wrote about earlier. I really enjoyed it, but I wish that the grandfather didn't die. I also wish that Rachel wasn't treated like she was by the Pritchards. I think that the book should have had Rachel's parents be in the book a little longer instead of dying in the beginning. I wish the book was longer or that another book came before this one talking about Valerie's life and what she did instead of having one book be all about Rachel. I was really happy when Rachel ran away from the Pritchards house in London to go see Mr. Grumbloch because if she didn't she wouldn't have been able to live with the grandfather. I was shocked when Mr. G and the grandfather and everyone that worked for him knew that Rachel was pretending to be Valerie. Also I figured out that the grandfather is very observing because he figured out that she was not Valerie because she didn't ask for money or complain about Africa. I still think that more people should read the book Listening for Lions. It is amazing! :)
In social studies I had to make a Powtoon about three English settlements. Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth. I worked really hard on my Powtoon so, I hope you enjoy it! In fifth grade we have book clubs, I am currently reading the book "Listening for Lions" with two other fifth graders. So far I LOVE the book! It has a lot of sadness and happiness and people getting upset and people being rude. The main character of the story is Rachel Sheridan (Pritchard) Her last name is Sheridan because that was her dads last name so it was obviously hers, but it is also Pritchard because she has to live with the Pritchards then she is forced to move to England and live with Mr. Pritchards dad. But, she is forced to pretend to be Valerie, Mr and Mrs Pritchards dead daughter. I honestly think that to pretend to be a little girl about my age who is dead is wrong. Rachel is also mistreated a lot mainly by Mr Pritchard and now that she lives with his dad he mistreats her TERRIBLY! He made her sing to get her supper, he told her when she arrived "This is not what I expected, I expected you to be better. That is pretty much all of the main things that have happened so far. I am currently at chapter seven.
I have a thought: I think that since everybody tells Rachel she looks just like Valerie and that Rachel thinks that it was reincarnation is the reason why they look so alike. I agree with Rachel I think that it was reincarnation. Reincarnation: Reincarnation is the religious or philosophical concept that the soul or spirit, after biological death, begins a new life in a new body. I suggest that you read the book, it is SO GOOD! :-) Today we watched a music video called "I Lived" by the band One Republic. The lyrics have a very deep meaning behind them. There is one that says "Hope when the moment come you'll say... I did it all" that means to me, make every day of your life worth living. Don't just sit at home and watch television, go outside and bike, run, anything just something. The music video is centered around a fifteen year old boy named Bryan and he has cystic fibrosis disease. Cystic fibrosis is a disease that affects your lungs and digestive system. Mainly the lungs though. What it does is it has mucus in your lungs, we have mucus in our lungs as well but our is more water and people with cystic fibrosis have mucus that is more thick and syrupy. I know that sounds kind of gross but this disease and many others are serious. People have not found a cure for cystic fibrosis which is extremely unfortunate, but I hope that they find one so they can help save lives. Cystic fibrosis is not a disease that you can catch from somebody, you are born with it. Also how it affects your lungs is that it makes it extremely hard to breathe and in the video you'll see that Bryan is struggling to breathe when he is in the hospital bed. In the video Bryan says that his worst fear is to not be able to do the things that he wants to do an to accomplish his life goals. Cystic fibrosis is most common in white people of Northern European ancestry, but also occurs in Hispanics, African-Americans and some Native Americans. It is rare in people of Asian and Middle Eastern origin. Doctors say that people with cystic fibrosis will only live up to around 35-36. Hopefully they find a cure to help expand that time.
